Fairfield County Auditor

Each county has an elected official called the Auditor. He is by law the Chief Fiscal Officer of the county. So is the Fairfield County Auditor. He has a variety of duties to attend to. Chief among his duties is keeping the accounts of the County. Under the tag of General Accounting, he is entrusted with such duties as administering the millions of dollars of tax money that come into the County treasury each year. It is the County Auditor's duty to distribute this money to villages, school districts, libraries, towns and such other places that require tax money for their upkeep. The County Auditor is responsible for the pay of the employees of the County; hence he is the County Payroll Administrator. He is also responsible for the preparation of Official Financial Reports annually for the County, State and Federal Governments.

Administration of Real Estate Taxes is another duty of the County Auditor. He is responsible for the preparation of the Annual General Tax List. This list contains the taxable valuations on which the payable tax is based. Under the tax duties the County Auditor is also responsible for Special Assessments and managing tax refunds and any reliefs in taxes.

Appraisal of Real Estate for tax purposes is also done by the County Auditor. By law the County Auditor is required to carry out an appraisal of every block of land in the County and the buildings that they contain every six years. Every three years, he has to do an update. The County Auditor keeps detailed records of these appraisals and they are available online for the public.

The County Auditor strictly enforces State of Ohio laws on Weights and Measures throughout the County. Through this activity the County Auditor protects the public and businesses from possible losses due to faulty measuring equipment. The County Auditors duties go on to cover licensing of dogs and kennels, tax reliefs like Homestead Exemptions, Special Assessments, Data Processing and Registration of Manufactured Housing. The performer of all these duties is called the Fairfield County Auditor, though those duties are anything but auditing!
